Robert B. Ray is the author of A Certain Tendency of the Hollywood Cinema, 1930–1980 (Princeton University Press); The Avant-Garde Finds Andy Hardy (Harvard University Press); How a Film Theory Got Lost, and Other Mysteries in Cultural Studies (Indiana University Press); The ABCs of Classic Hollywood (Oxford University Press); Walden X 40: Essays on Thoreau (Indiana University Press); The Structure of Complex Images (Palgrave Macmillan); and All the President’s Men (BFI Film Classics), with Christian Keathley (Bloomsbury: 2023)..
He teaches courses in film studies, contemporary criticism, and intellectual history, with a particular interest in experimental critical practice. His scholarly interests include film history and aesthetics; film and philosophy; storytelling in literature and film; and poetry. He holds a PhD from Indiana University, an MBA from Harvard, a JD from the University of Virginia, and an AB from Princeton.
