Marie Nelson

Professor Emerita

Marie Nelson received her PhD from the University of Oregon. Her publications include two books, Structures of Opposition in Old English Poems and Judith, Juliana, and Elene: Three Fighting Saints, and essays on Old and Modern English Literature in SpeculumOral Tradition,Language and Style, and other journals.

Professor Nelson has also written a series of “teaching texts”: Words on the Page: Writing About LanguageReadings for History of the English Language, and Chaucer/Chaucer’s Women, along with three sets of exercises for her undergraduate and graduate courses: “Old English Riddles,” “Working Texts,” and “Heroes in Transformation.” While a member of the UF Department of English, she taught courses on Writing about Aggression, Writing about Language, Fantasy, Old English, Chaucer/Chaucer’s Women, and History of the English Language. She continues to teach ENC3310: Advanced Exposition/Writing about Language for the University of Florida Honors Program.
